Remarkably for a nineteenth century conflict, two of the best remembered people to emerge from the Crimean War were women. Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole revolutionised modern wartime nursing. In recent years the reputation of both women has controversially changed. We will look at the careers of both these pioneers of battlefield nursing and try to cut through the controversy to re-evaluate their place in history.
